The forgotten essay, back in print

In 2024 Dirk Heißerer and Klaus Kanzog edited Loewenstein's 1948 essay on Doktor Faustus back into print, together with Thomas Mann's reply, in a documentation volume available from the Würzburg publisher Königshausen & Neumann. Its own title calls the piece der vergessene Aufsatz — the forgotten essay.

It ran once, in the Tel Aviv Mitteilungsblatt in July 1948, and then dropped out of view. Thomas Mann read it and answered by letter that September. The volume prints both, and argues that the piece identifies a narrative method in the novel that criticism had missed.

Alongside the essay it carries a study by Klaus Kanzog on Mann's phenomenological narration, and the reactions of Hans Reisiger and Annette Kolb to finding themselves portrayed in the novel.
